The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, or SMFM, is devoted to improving healthcare for mothers and their babies. Cecilia Gaffaney, MD, belongs to SMFM. Along with many other members of the Society, Dr. Cecilia Lyons Gaffaney is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, a physician with special expertise in high-risk or otherwise unusual pregnancies. Below are three of SMFM’s critical initiatives.
1. Save mothers’ lives. Amazingly, the risk of maternal fatality as a result of childbirth in America is higher now than it was in 1990. To combat this troubling trend, SMFM focuses specifically on research, education, and higher quality of care to decrease the risk of maternal death.
2. Put the “M” in “MFM.” In line with its first initiative, the Society hopes to bring a stronger focus to maternal health. This topic was one of two central lectures at the most recent annual meeting of SMFM, which is also known as The Pregnancy Meeting.
3. Reinforce patient safety. New tools and checklists are being created for implementation in maternity hospitals by collaborating personnel from nearly 30 organizations, such as the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These materials will be released in 2014.
