In addition to her duties as an obstetrician and a gynecologist, Dr. Cecilia Lyons Gaffaney maintains a strong interest in hiking, which she has done throughout South America and elsewhere. Having hiked in Peru and other high-elevation locales, Cecilia Gaffaney, MD, has developed an excellent understanding of the preparation required for such treks.
High-altitude hiking generally requires two months of preparation. This is particularly true for high-altitude hikes at 8,000 feet above sea level or higher. During this period, hikers should take steps to increase their lung capacity (e.g., interval training). They should also plan to carry plenty of water and, even well in advance of the hike, avoid medications like sleeping pills that could depress breathing. To reduce the risk of altitude sickness, hikers should also supplement their diet with Ginkgo biloba at least five days prior a high-altitude hike. Pacing is also important and offers the added benefit of fuller enjoyment of the scenery.
